Motability - FAQs

Am I eligible for the Scheme?

You must be receiving one of these benefits:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

You must also have at least 12 months of remaining payments to fully qualify.

What is the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement?

This allowance is provided by Veterans UK. As of April 2015, this is £64.15 per week (April 2015).

What is the Higher Rate Mobility Component?

This allowance is awarded by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). It is gradually being replaced by the Personal Independence Payment (PIP). The allowance is £57.45 per week (April 2015).

Who qualifies for the Higher Rate Mobility Component?

The DWP decides who can claim this benefit. The Higher Rate can also be awarded to children from the age of three up to 16, and you can make an application through the Scheme on their behalf as a parent, carer or guardian. Children who claim DLA are switched to claiming the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) on turning 16.

I have less than 12 months of allowance left – can I still apply?

Not unless the DWP extends your benefits for at least another 12 months.

Can there be two Motability customers at the same address?

Yes. There is no limit on the number of Motability customers in your household, as long as they all qualify individually. Any cars you own which are not through the Scheme do not affect your eligibility.

Do any other allowances make me eligible for the Motability Scheme?

No. Please note that Attendance Allowance is not eligible, nor any other benefit outside of the four listed on this page.

Paying for the car

Can I get a car on a Hire Purchase agreement?

No. All agreements through the Motability Scheme are Contract Hire plans.

Is the Advance Payment refunded at the end?

No. The Advance Payment is a payment, and not counted as a deposit.

How much will leasing a Motability car cost?

The amount depends on the make, model and equipment of the vehicle you need. Any Advance Payment needed will also affect the lease amount. This will, however, be met by most or all of your qualifying benefits.

Financial help

Will Motability help with the cost of a car or adaptations?

The goal of Motability is not explicitly to give drivers financial aid, but to help them find the most affordable and cost-effective vehicle. If you decide on a certain car and an alternative suitable model would cost less, typically there is no extra financial aid for the more expensive option. On top of this, Motability does not and will not finance a vehicle that you have already ordered or received.

How do I apply for financial help?

If there is no suitable vehicle within your budget, speak with Motability Customer Services on 0300 456 4566. They can advise you on alternative options, and will send you a finance application form if you qualify for aid. Once you return the form, Motability will assign a Case Manager and get back to you within 48 hours. The Case Manager will then be responsible for your entire application.

If financial aid is not the most suitable choice, it may be suggested that you look at extending the lease instead.

Is financial support means-tested?

Your household income may be used in some cases. All assessments of your need for financial aid will also take your personal finance into account.

Can I add my own money to financial aid from Motability to 'top it up'?

As any funds you have could mean you do not qualify for financial support in the first place, this is usually impossible. If you can make those contributions, it is likely that Motability will reject your application for financial aid and disqualify you from other claims.

Getting a vehicle

Are there any electric or 'green' vehicles available?

Yes, electric cars from certain manufacturers can be ordered. If you plan to only make short trips, an electrically-powered vehicle could save on motoring costs. All customers who choose an electric car on Motability must have a charging point fitted at their home. It should be outside of the main home but in an off-road space on the property, such as in your garage or driveway. You can search specifically for electric Motability models online by choosing 'electric' under 'fuel type'.

The Scheme's aim of reducing the environmental impact of driving also means 'green' vehicles are highlighted in search results.

Where can I find a car's average 'miles per gallon' (mpg) figure?

This is listed next to each vehicle in online search results.

Do any vehicles come with lumbar support?

Yes, in many cases the standard equipment includes seats with lumbar support or bolstering. Discuss this with the team at the dealership when you visit.

How do I find the vehicle that's best for me?

Our suggestion is to do plenty of research before starting a Motability application. Check reviews of your preferred model, compare cars, and test drive any vehicle you are interested in to make sure it feels right.

As the test drive in particular is important in decision-making, we offer extended appointments for Motability customers. Use the additional time to confirm the comfort level and check the accessibility. Ultimately, if you have any doubts about the vehicle after test driving it then it is unlikely to be the one for you.

Which colours are models available in?

This varies by vehicle, but you will always have choices.

What if the car/WAV I want isn't on the price list?

Please contact Motability Customer Services on 0300 456 4566 in the first instance.

How do I apply for the Motability Scheme, and what do I need?

Once you know you are eligible, come to the dealership and talk to a Motability specialist. They will handle the application and submit it there and then.

When you visit, you need to have all of the following in hand:

  • your Certificate of Entitlement for eligible benefits
  • a Driver Consent form and licence for all named drivers
  • a recent utility bill to confirm your address

You will receive a PIN for your application, which needs to be supplied when you visit again to collect the Motability car.

What is the Motability Suitability Questionnaire?

This is a key part of your application. The results of the questionnaire will determine whether both the Scheme and your chosen vehicle are the most appropriate options. In some cases, the dealership will arrange a visit to your home to make sure it is also suitable – e.g., that you have a parking space.

What is the Driver Consent form?

If you are naming additional drivers for the vehicle, they must be stated on the application and they each need to complete a Driver Consent form. This includes signing to confirm they understand the Scheme and that they will abide by its terms. All signed and completed Driver Consent forms and driving licences must be taken to the dealership when you apply.

What is a Safe Date?

This date is provided to Motability Operations by DWP. It represents the day your qualifying benefits will be held from, so they can pay for your chosen vehicle. This will then act as the Earliest Handover Date, the first date on which you can collect the car. Your Motability agreement cannot start before this date.

Can I change my mind after the application is submitted?

Please get in touch with the dealership immediately should you change your mind. It may be possible to cancel for a fee. However, this is not guaranteed.

How long will it be until my new car arrives?

There is no set timeframe: the manufacturer, make and model, and adaptations needed can all affect the wait. It is best to check in with your dealership to find out how long the process will take. Customers who are already on the Scheme cannot collect another Motability car until their current lease is over.

The time between applying and receiving a Motability car is not set in stone. It can depend on the model, any adaptations you specified, and on other options and accessories. If you want to check on the progress of your application, please contact the dealership. Customers already on Motability are only able to order and collect another car on the Scheme once their current lease has ended.

When I collect the car, what should I bring?

Please bring proof of your identity, driving licences for all named drivers, and the PIN provided by Motability.

I have lost my PIN. How do I find or change it?

If you are due to collect the car in less than two weeks, contact the dealership. If there are more than two weeks to go, call Motability Customer Services on 0300 4564566.

Can collections be arranged on the weekend?

If the dealership is typically open over the weekend, this is usually possible.

Can someone else collect or take delivery on my behalf?

An appointed carer is the only person allowed to do this. It is strongly advised you collect and enter your PIN personally. This is because a Motability agreement is legally binding on you as the primary vehicle user.

Can I get a caravan or motor home?

Unfortunately, the Scheme does not currently provide either of these options.
